Rocktobersaurus, SMARTen Up!

I've fucked up. Back-to-school September was a total bust, but Rocktobersaurus was an even bigger bust. There is no album. There isn't even a song. All there is are the memories. (Was that a grammatically correct sentence?) I did some cool stuff during October, but it was totally uneventful and not what I want The Monthly Challenge to be about. The Monthly Challenge is about growing and doing new, exciting things constantly. It's not about sitting around drinking with friends pretending to blindly write music.

Fortunately, during the past few weeks at work, I think I've figured out why I've completely and utterly failed the last two months. I haven't been making S.M.A.R.T. goals. The acronym is some nonsense we use at work when writing our yearly goals. It's a little stuffy, but it works. For those of you who don't work in a corporate environment (who I may be somewhat jealous of), S.M.A.R.T. goals are:

  • Specific - Narrow it down and nail it down.
  • Measurable - How can you know if you're succeeding if there's no way to measure your progress against a goal?
  • Attainable - There are step you can take to reach the goal.
  • Realistic - Do you believe it can be accomplished?
  • Timely - Give yourself a time frame

You can't just say "I'm going to be awesome for the whole month of November!" - you actually need to define how you're going to measure awesomeness. I tried to set a schedule for September, but no goals. For October, I set a totally unattainable, vague goal. And now all I have to show for it is a few kickass applications on my iPhone, and a shitty half-finished remix of The Roots' Criminal. Sure, I had a few people over to jam/whatever, but it was mostly just hanging out and drinking. There should have been more rocking, but I have a lot of old people living in my building.

So, from now on, all of my goals are going to be S.M.A.R.T. and hopefully this blog won't suck as much any more.
