I went all around LA today, trying to get some photos for one of the classes I'm taking. I was walking back to my car by Fairfax & Melrose and a cute little record store caught my eye. It was just loaded with records, so I went in and asked the owner if I could take a picture. His response was "Sure, one. More than one is a photo shoot." I should've known at that point to be careful.
On my way out, I tried making some small talk, by thanking the owner and then saying I wish I had a record player so I could check out his collection and buy something. That comment triggered something, because the owner then began a semi-confrontational mini-tirade about technology and how money hungry record companies have ruined music. The conversation started with us arguing over the semantics of the word "stereo" - because I used it as a shorthand version of "stereo system." Then it led to him berating digital reproductions of music. Fortunately, the antagonism wore off after a few minutes of talking. I'm not sure what the owner's name was, but he seemed to be fairly interesting, if a bit crazy and mean at first. I was going to ask him how he felt about illegally downloaded music, but I had places to be.
Maybe I'll stop by and chat again with him after I record an album on my iPhone.
