Rejuvinatin' June

The Monthly Challenge is an excuse for me to make myself a better person. Each month, I'll set a new goal and try to achieve it, beginning with running a half marathon at the end of June, 2008.

(although this has since changed.)

The idea began with a little project called Moustache May. I was bored with my beard and needed a reason to rock a ridiculous moustache for a while. Needless to say, the power of the 'stache did teach me many lessons (like avoid small children while having a moustache), making me a better, more cultured person.

A bit before Moustache May, an old college friend posted a picture of me on facebook from back in the day. And back in the day, I was a sprinter on the track team. And that meant I was in really good shape. Currently, I am not a member of any track team. For a while, my sole form of exercise was a weekly game of kickball which had left me in a somewhat gelatinous state. I needed something to motivate me to get back into shape, so The Monthly Challenge was born. (I'll admit there was also a bit of inspiration from my old high school buddy Mike, as well as a friend of a friend (of a friend?) named Opus.)

Now don't be scared, this isn't a health-nut, let's exercise kind of blog. I just happen to want to get back into shape for the ladies. But future months may include such riveting challenges as "watch a new movie every day" or "try a new delicious beer every day" or maybe even an eco-friendly "let's recycle all of our shit for a month." (Well, not literally "shit" - I mean more like a "bottles and cans" type of thing.)

So there you have it. That's my plan. If you want to read along, enjoy. And if you have any worthwhile challenges, feel free to post them in the comments.

The 10mi. Run - Accomplished

That's right - I made it the full

Resting Up

I've planned out

Rejuvinatin' June - T Minus Three

I have three days until the big day. I went for a ~3.5mi run yesterday and then a little over 5 miles today. I felt pretty good after the run today - not too tired, not too out of breath - but I'll need to double that on Sunday. Oh, and then there's the whole being sore an hour afterwards thing. I'm pretty sure I won't be able to go into work on Monday, let alone walk. I'll probably be in a bathtub full of ice. If I don't go to work, maybe I can bring my laptop into the ice bath. Yeah, that'd be fun.

Rejuvinatin' June - Getting There..?

I went for about a 3.5-4 mile run on Thursday during the middle of a heat wave. It was pretty hard. I'm beginning to think that the run around Griffith Park isn't the best idea - in fact, it's probably a pretty bad idea. If it's even close to how hot it has been, I'd be in big trouble with no water for a full ten miles. I'm thinking about doing a series of loops centered around my house in case I get incredibly dehydrated or need to bandage up some blisters. If it's dangerously hot out still, I may buy an iPod shuffle and head over to the treadmills at my gym.

Rejuvinatin' June - The New Challenge

So, the only half-marathon I can find anytime soon is the Disneyland half marathon at the end of August. I'm planning on being extremely out of shape by then, so the new challenge for June is going to be to run a ~10 mi. loop by myself. This may be harder since I won't have other runners to push me, or onlookers who I don't want to look lame and tired in front of.

The Runyon Run - Failed

I made my way up Mulholland Drive and over to the North entrance of Runyon Canyon to begin one of the hardest runs (if not the hardest) I've ever done. On the way over, I was all business baby, as documented by the photograph below.

DTERMINATION!!!

I began the run down and ran into (get it?) Tokle on the way. He joined me to the bottom, and the further we went, the more I realized how big, long, and steep the hard loop was going to be.

The Runyon Run

The goal for this Saturday is to run the "hard loop" at Runyon Canyon. The loop is probably about a bit over a mile of incredibly narrow and steep paths followed by probably another mile and a half or so of downhills. (Those measurements could be way off.) The tough part though, is that I'll likely be doing this on Saturday afternoon which is supposed to be 85 degrees.

Five Mile Run - Accomplished

I made it all the way through somehow! There are a lot more hills in Los Angeles than you'd expect...at least in my neighborhood.

Five Mile Run

Tomorrow brings promises of heavy drinking & Scrabble at Rina's birthday party, along with the first test of The Monthly Challenge -
